Trevelen Farm Wines
The Sprigg family history includes great grandparents who were pioneers of the wine industry in the early to mid 1800s south of Adelaide at Happy Valley in close proximity to Reynella. The family, whose agricultural credentials included growing a wide range of crops, including wine grapes, and nurturing livestock, moved to the Great Southern region of Western Australia in August 1965. Always being ‘wine aware’ John and Katie Sprigg had numerous holidays in wine country in the Eastern States. They fell in love with ‘the Clare’ in South Australia and were struck by the similarities in climate and soil around ‘Trevelen Farm’ and Frankland in Western Australia. When the first vineyards at Frankland started producing distinctive wines, the germ of an idea began that a vineyard producing wine at Trevelen Farm could be something special. In 1993, the dream began to turn into reality when Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were planted. Two years later more of these varieties were planted and more again two years after that, but this time Sauvignon Blanc was also planted. From the first vintage, Riesling was a standout, but all varieties showed interesting and different characteristics.Show success has been consistent with a medal being won at almost every vintage. The insulated storage shed was built in 1999, followed by the cellar door tasting room which was opened by the Minister for Agriculture, Monty House, in May 2001.Guided by Merv Lange of Alkoomi, with great winemaking by Michael Staniford, Trevelen Farm’s reputation grew. An offer too good to refuse came in 2004 when James Kellie offered his wine making services at his new 300 tonne (now 500 tonne) facility at Harewood Estate in Denmark, WA. For many years, James was the Great Southern winemaker for Howard Park wines in Western Australia. It was fortunate that James had links with some excellent Frankland vineyards and Trevelen Farm had access to enough good fruit which, combined with the home vineyard, enabled a quality range to grow. Trevelen Farm is actively seeking Danish representation for their premium wine produced in and around the Frankland area of the Great Southern Region of Western Australia. B2B profile |
